Dr. Adam Brown

Brown's expertise is in human development, which he has taught for 20 years. He developed an honors course titled "Human Pregnancy."Brown also is researching ways to reduce nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (NVP) while increasing health outcomes for embryos and fetuses.

​Description:

  • Coordinating team and problem-solving while accessing and integrating research to synthesize new conclusions. â€‹

Duties:

  • Collaborating with the research team members on weekly basis, delegating tasks and discussing expectations, goals, progress.

  • Understanding the role of iodine in pregnancy, the current recommendations of dosage and the potential impact on increased NVP depending on environmental location and consumption of iodine rich foods.

  • Description:​

    • Primarily focused on distributing, analyzing and compiling information drawn from recent studies on pregnancy sex during pregnancy, in addition to other subtopics of pregnancy.

  • Duties:​

    • Analyzing up to date research articles on pregnancy and sex during pregnancy.

    • Management of calendar by setting and following due dates and deadlines.

    • Accommodating to schedules of all team members while coordinating meetings, duties and deadlines. 

    • Communicating on a weekly basis about progress, tasks and goals.

    • Compiling, organizing all submitted researchand relaying to appropriate team members.

    • Providing feedback on submitted research to maintain validity and quality.

  • Description: 

    • Primarily focused on collecting information relating to the causes for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy including researching teratogens and the role of food aversion as a cause for NVP

  • Duties:

    • Current project lead for the NVP review article

    • Using team research feedback to adjust analysis skills

    • Analyzing research articles on the effects of teratogens on pregnancy sickness and cause of food aversion during pregnancy

  • Focused on researching, reviewing, and organizing topics related to the role of iodine during the mother's pregnancy, the consequential development of the fetus, and the risks that excess iodine may pose to the mother and fetus.

  • Responsibilities involve locating and reviewing information regarding the role of iodine during pregnancy and fetal development and collaborating with the research team and a local OB/GYN on a weekly basis to ensure efficient communication and ongoing progress on our project.

    • Primarily focused on obtaining and analyzing research regarding teratogens as they relate to organogenesis and NVP.

  • Duties:

    • Understanding biochemical pathways in the fetus and mother that teratogens interact with after ingestion

    • Organization of findings 

    • Interdisciplinary communication with other team members to create a broader picture of research

Description:  

  • Focused on refining, summarizing, and organizing existing research analyses in designated chapters for appropriate contextual reference, compiling research on socioeconomic or biochemical factors impacting quality of life on mothers and infant development.  

Duties

  • Refining and summarizing current and previous article findings on pregnancy health and organizing them for maximum clarity and flow for finalizing resources. 

  • Researching teratogenic effects on NVP and birth defects  

  • Collaborating ideas and distributing workload to meet deadlines

Spencer Carbone

Senior Chemistry Research Intern

  • Description:​

    • Advised by Scott Simpson, Ph.D., Chemistry Department, St. Bonaventure University & Consortium for the Study of Pregnancy and Prenatal Development, regarding experimental procedures and utilization of quantum chemical theory and ab initio analysis to investigate pesticide behavior in liquid chromatography column.

  • Duties:

    • Investigate the chemical separation behavior of agricultural pesticides (retention time) within an analytical chemistry liquid chromatography column.

    • Create computer chemical models of pesticide structures.

    • Perform various quantum calculations (DFT & COSMO-RS) to produce theoretical pesticide reference data.

    • Treat and analyze produce samples with agricultural pesticides.

    • Develop protocol to isolate organic pesticide molecules from produce sample.

    • Develop statistical model to explain data.

    • Complete data analysis and validate predictive model with real-world results.

    • Consult with Dr. Simpson & Dr. Brown about findings.

    • Focus on examining current trends in literature pertaining to the supplementation of Iodine and other nutrients, with a special interest on the effects of deficiencies and over-use on the health of both parent and fetus.

    • Work with group members to ensure a coherent theory is developed
      Read, summarize and analyze current research publications
      Connect primary sources to clinical treatment data
      Summarize all findings to contribute to a larger work developed by the team
